North Boulder Carries Boulder's First Friday Into Winter on Its Own

  • October 29, 2026

Boulder spent the summer of 2026 running a two-district First Friday. The New Local held a 4 to 7 p.m. art walk downtown and the NoBo Art District picked up the crowd from 6 to 9 p.m. on North Broadway, with buses connecting the two. That partnership finished on September 4, which The New Local billed as its "Final" downtown art walk "of the season."

Tomorrow, Friday, November 6, 2026, First Friday belongs to North Boulder alone, as it did for most of its history. The walk runs 6 to 9 p.m. along Broadway from Pine Street to Highway 36, and it's free. The calendar for the next month shows the district settling into its winter version, built around open studios, small work and gifts.

The Art Walk Returns to Its Roots

NoBo's First Friday began in 2009, when a group of artists organized to bring more visibility to their work and to a lesser-known corner of Boulder, according to Boulder Reporting Lab. Liz Compos, executive director of the NoBo Art District, told the outlet the goal was "to bring the audience to the artists where they were working."

The 2026 citywide push was meant to spread that energy south. The New Local led it, working with the NoBo Art District and Boulder Chamber Transportation Connections, and the campaign "Hop & Skip to First Friday" encouraged people to start downtown and ride up Broadway for the later NoBo hours. Transportation Connections describes the campaign as grant-funded and lists its in-person outreach dates as July 3, August 7 and September 4.

Compos drew the line between the two districts plainly in the same Boulder Reporting Lab piece:

"NoBo Art District is the place where artists are able to create. A lot of [NoBo First Friday] is being able to see inside the artists' day-to-day and inside their making process."

With the downtown leg off the calendar, November's walk is that version of the event and nothing else: working studios on North Broadway with their doors open for three hours.

For scale, Boulder Reporting Lab put NoBo's summer First Friday attendance at 1,000 to 2,000 people. That's a figure for the summer months. A November evening is a different walk, darker by 6 p.m. and spent mostly indoors in studios.

Tomorrow Night, Stop by Stop

The district's own instructions are simple. Grab a map, follow the brightly colored flags, and look for the info tents. Some participants keep their own opening and closing times, and those show up on the monthly map at noboartdistrict.org.

A practical order for the first hour:

  1. Map tent outside NoBo Center for the Arts, 4929 Broadway #E. The Boulder County Arts Alliance listing names this as the pickup point.
  2. The monthly exhibitions. The district's listing names shows at the Bus Stop Gallery and NoBo on the Corner, alongside open studios, live music and artist demos. The NoBo Art Center gallery is the exception for now. The Daily Camera's October 2 guide reports it closed at its current location while it prepares for a new space. The district's new space at 4939 Broadway #61 will house seven studio pods and the NoBo Artist In Residency Program.
  3. Crowd Collective, 4939 Broadway. November marks "the return of our annual Small Originals show," and each resident artist will have their studio open to talk about current projects, with art, music and food from 6 to 9 p.m.

Small Originals matters most for tomorrow night. The district's listing invites visitors to "Discover original art, support your neighbors, and leave with gifts worth bragging about." In early November, a show of small original pieces in an open studio building lines up with that pitch exactly. It makes this walk the start of holiday shopping in North Boulder, with the artists' studios open a few steps away from the show.

Dinner Has to Fit the Three-Hour Window

On a NoBo First Friday, the walk sets the timing for dinner. Several of the most familiar stops on this stretch of Broadway are daytime businesses, so the 6 to 9 p.m. window shrinks your options quickly.

Stop Address Friday hours Fits the 6 to 9 p.m. walk?
Cinq à Sept 4580 Broadway 4 to 10 p.m. Yes, before, during or after
Logan's Espresso Cafe 4790 Broadway 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Yes, until the walk ends
Moxie Bread Co. 4593 Broadway 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. No, closes before the walk starts
Nude Foods Market 4593 Broadway 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. No, closes before the walk starts

Cinq à Sept is the only full sit-down kitchen in this group that stays open past the walk. The French bistro opened in July 2026, and a recent Boulder Reporting Lab story describes a menu built on French classics and seasonal ingredients. Its daily happy hour runs 4 to 5 p.m., an hour before the first studio opens, so an early drink and an early table make an easy start. Fridays it serves until 10 p.m., which leaves an hour of dinner after the flags come down.

Logan's Espresso Cafe works for the middle of the walk. It serves coffee, panini, soup, salads, beer and wine, and stays open until 9 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.

One more name will matter soon. DAR Chocolate has announced a shop and tasting room at 4593 Broadway, next to Moxie and Nude Foods, but Boulder Reporting Lab's report on the plan gave no opening date. If it opens with evening hours, the busy morning corner at 4593 Broadway would have a reason to stay lit on First Fridays.

One Walk Starts a Month of Dates

Tomorrow's walk opens a run of dated arts events along North Broadway that lasts into December. Every one of them sits inside the same few blocks.

  1. Friday, November 6, 6 to 9 p.m. First Friday Art Walk, with Small Originals at Crowd Collective.
  2. Friday, November 13, 7 to 9 p.m. East Window, at 4550 Broadway, holds the opening reception for "Effigy 1462" by Yumi Janairo Roth. The exhibition runs November 13 through December 18, 2026.
  3. Saturday, November 14, starting at 5 p.m. The NoBo Art District's pARTy for the ARTs 2026 takes place at 4939 Broadway, unit 61. The evening opens with a 5 to 6 p.m. cocktail hour with appetizers, and the program runs until 9 p.m. Admission is $20, or $10 for NoBo members using the member discount code, through the event's ticket page.
  4. Friday, December 4, 6 to 9 p.m. The December First Friday Art Walk.
  5. Saturday, December 5, noon to 7 p.m. The North Boulder Holiday Art Market, according to Visit Boulder's artisan market listings.

The pARTy for the ARTs, one Saturday after the November walk, is the district raising money for itself at the address of its future studio space. December's First Friday and the Holiday Art Market land on back-to-back days, giving gift shoppers a Friday evening and a Saturday afternoon on the same corridor. For the rest of 2026, the art district is also North Boulder's holiday shopping district.

Getting Up Broadway on the SKIP

Hop & Skip was a branded campaign, and the bus it was built on keeps running. RTD's current SKIP weekday timetable covers September 27, 2026, through January 2, 2027, which includes the Friday dates above: November 6, November 13 and December 4. Saturdays run on a separate RTD schedule, so check it before heading to the November 14 party or the December 5 market. Northbound buses leave about every 15 minutes through the early evening and less often later at night, with Broadway timepoints at Canyon, Alpine, Iris and Front Range. RTD's route map marks Yarmouth, Broadway and Iris in the North Boulder section of the line.

If you live north of Iris, that means the art walk, a bistro dinner and the ride home all happen along one street. Service gets less frequent as the night goes on, so check the RTD SKIP schedule before you stay for that last glass at Cinq à Sept.

North Boulder's studios, galleries and late kitchens are a big part of what makes the corridor between Iris and Highway 36 a good place to live.
